TL;DR
OnePlus is offering a free screen upgrade to OnePlus 8 Pro, OnePlus 8T, OnePlus 9, and OnePlus 9R users to avoid the infamous green line issue.
This new screen for older phones promises to increase durability, as it is specially designed to perform well in high humidity and high temperature environments.
This screen upgrade benefit is currently available in India, but the company is exploring the possibility of expanding it to other regions, including the US.
Smartphones with AMOLED displays frequently experience green line issues, and it’s not limited to one manufacturer. This hardware issue often occurs after a phone software update, misleading users into believing that correlation is the cause. Many companies have ignored this hardware issue and left customers to fend for themselves: either pay for an out-of-warranty repair or live with the green line. OnePlus is the only company that has offered a lifetime screen warranty, and now, the company is improving its promise by preemptively replacing the screen on select models to prevent the issue.
X user Starcommander has spotted a new perk in OnePlus’ Red Cable Club loyalty program. In line with the lifetime free display upgrade offer, OnePlus is offering OnePlus 8 Pro, OnePlus 8T, OnePlus 9, and OnePlus 9R users a free “display upgrade,” provided the phone does not suffer any damage or unauthorized repairs. Note that the Red Cable Club benefits are currently limited to India only, so this upgrade remains limited to India.

We reached out to OnePlus for more details on the aforementioned “screen upgrade,” and the company exclusively shared with us details about its free screen diagnostic and service initiative at Android Authority.
This initiative includes three levels of service:
Complete diagnosis: An in-depth evaluation of display performance and reliability.
Screen Upgrades and Replacements: Eligible users can receive a “new advanced display” that “enhances performance with vibrant colors and increased durability.” This display is said to be “specifically designed to perform well in high-humidity and high-temperature environments.”
Deep cleaning service: A free deep cleaning of the device to ensure its optimal functioning.
OnePlus claims to have been proactively working with its suppliers to develop new display technologies (for these older devices that are no longer being sold). These new displays feature improvements that appear to “improve the display’s resistance to humidity and environmental conditions.”
We asked for more details on the specifics of the screen upgrade, and the company assured us that all replacements met its high-quality standards.
Currently, this initiative is focused on the OnePlus 8 Pro and will be extended to a number of other older models depending screen Availability. Users can visit our service centers for a diagnosis to determine if their device is at risk. Devices with man-made damage, such as drops or liquid intrusion, are not eligible for this free upgrade and must be repaired through our standard after-sales service.
As seen in the Red Cable Club perks screenshot, supported devices include the OnePlus 8 Pro, OnePlus 8T, OnePlus 9, and OnePlus 9R.
Additionally, while the initiative is currently limited to the Indian market, OnePlus is considering similar solutions for the US and other countries:
While this initiative is currently specific to the Indian market, we are exploring the possibility of extending similar benefits to other regions, including the United States. We are committed to keeping users informed of any future developments. This initiative underscores our commitment to providing exceptional service and support to our users.
Should you change your OnePlus phone screen to avoid green line problem?
OnePlus should be commended for continuing to provide a solution for older customers, especially those who are out of warranty but are affected by such hardware issues through no fault of their own.
It’s not yet clear whether the display’s lifetime warranty also applies to the newly replaced display. We’ve reached out to OnePlus for clarification on this, and we’ll update the article as soon as we know more.
Assuming the lifetime display warranty also applies to the new, more durable display, Indian users with older OnePlus flagships have two choices. They can either keep their current display and enjoy the lifetime display warranty, or opt for a free preemptive screen swap to the new, more durable display.
In my opinion, if your screen has been working fine so far, there is no reason to go for a screen replacement right away since the company promises some sort of resolution for the green line issue anyway if it happens in the future. You can go for a screen replacement (or other alternatives offered) if and when your device is affected by the issue. A preventative screen replacement is wise if you need that peace of mind in the present, or if you intend to keep the phone for a longer period of time and don’t want to take any chances with the future availability of replacement parts.
