If a live game reveals an interesting plot twist, but no one is there to see it, does it really exist? That’s what’s happening right now with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which revealed that its Justice League weren’t actually killed at all, but were copies, the real ones waiting to be rescued. First, The Flash, next? Free Superman, Batman, and Green Lantern. No luck, Wonder Woman.

But following Suicide Squad’s determination to finish its four-season run is… bleak. Now that Season 2 is out, we can see how it performed on Steam at least. PlayStation only shows us its top 10 games and Xbox its top 50, and it’s clear it wasn’t on either list. By contrast, on Steam, Season 2’s launch only garnered 572 peak players, just over double the 200 players that remained before launch, with some small periodic surges when the game went on sale.

As expected, this is playing out differently than the launch of the Joker season, which didn’t exactly skyrocket things to a healthy level, but did see a roughly 600% increase in late March. But even those who gave this season a chance back then are mostly gone now. Myself included, as I recently uninstalled the game to make room for others on my SSD.

Part of the problem was the release of a character that no one particularly wanted to play, Mrs. Freeze, a reverse version of the Batman villain, i.e. not the one we fought multiple times in the Arkham series. She comes in with the same problem, a frozen woman who needs help, and even with a cool ice surfing traversal ability, she was never going to resonate as much as Joker. Not that people really liked the alternate universe Joker either. I fear the same problem will present itself with Deadshot’s daughter Zoe Lawton next season, as she’s a minor character rather than a rogue’s gallery villain. The only announced character that players were looking forward to was Deathstroke in Season 4.

You can see the plan here, which assumed that Suicide Squad would be a success and would be able to tell its entire story over the course of a few years. But the problem was that it had to cut its main campaign halfway through in order to bury the live-action reveals later. were There are hints that we didn’t kill the Justice League in the main game, but only tiny hints and no direct revelations. It only came about now with the resurgence of the “real” Flash.

The logical endpoint of all this is that the death of the Arkham villain Batman is not After all, this is the last time we see Batman in Arkham. Fans have complained that this movie is on a bad note, both for the star of the Arkham games, but also for voice actor Kevin Conroy, who left for filming, despite this being one of his last appearances as Batman in any medium. We don’t know if Batman is returning and if Conroy lent his voice to new lines in advance.

Actually, I’d like to know what the general plot is here, which will now have to end after just one year, because there won’t be a second one with these numbers. If the game is growing its player count, it’s thanks to significant discounts or freebies on a few platforms. I said it’s worth playing it cheaply or for free for some of its combat and assembly, but it’s far from a coherent whole.

This season is going as I had hoped, if perhaps a little less well. I respect their persistence, but I don’t think it really makes sense, and it would be wise to call it a day and move on to other projects at this point.
