No matter what type of backpack, duffel bag, or carry-on suitcase you have when traveling with your vehicle, it’s always important to save space on long trips. We recently took the Peak Design Packing Cube Trio with us on a nearly five-week excursion abroad. Could this three-piece compression sack be the space-saver it promises to be?

We’ve already tested the Peak Design Camera Cubes and can’t live without them. Since we got them, they’ve been with us all over the world. For this 10-country trip, we took the Peak Design Small Camera Cube V2 and their older generation Medium Camera Carrier and filled them with cameras, GoPros, mounts, batteries, cords, and more without a hitch. So it was only natural to fill the Packing Cube with shorts, shirts, pants, and even shoes.

You can pack all kinds of clothes in these packing cubes and compress them easily.

Peak Design Packing Cube Set Features

Our Peak Design Charcoal Grey Packing Cubes are made from 100% recycled 70 denier nylon/polyester shells that are weather-resistant and self-healing. They also feature an abrasion-resistant coating, perfect for rugged travel. They are solution-dyed, making them perfect for maintaining their original colour if more rigorous cleaning of the product is required.

The zippers glided easily and the compression method worked well in small to medium sizes. … [+] cubes.

Peak Design uses UltraZips with abrasion-resistant UHMPE threads in each packing cube. The shoe pouch has the ability to fold down into itself to a size barely larger than the palm of your hand when not in use.

The front of the small and medium cubes has a quick-release tab system that works well.

The small and medium cubes are compressible and feature a front tab to grab and hold them for a quick opening experience. They also feature a unique zipper on the bottom side that hides a hidden divided compartment with the same footprint as the main area, perfect for storing dirty clothes as you travel. Both packing cubes have a small grab handle opposite the zipper opening, though we wish it had handles on both sides.

All Peak Design packing cubes are also Fair Trade certified, 100% carbon neutral and backed by a lifetime warranty.

The Peak Design Packing Cube trio traveled to 10 countries for nearly five weeks without a hitch.

Peak Design Packing Cubes Pack Impressions

While we’ve always rolled our clothes and stuffed them into our backpacks or bundled them loosely into our Ortlieb rolling duffel bag, using the Peak Design Packing Cubes pack would be a new way to pack. Not only was it a great, space-saving experience, but they also kept our clothes or gear cleaner, more organized, and quicker to reach.

The mesh sides are hard to see, making it difficult to guess which items are in which cube.

Mercedes Lilienthal

After nearly five weeks on the road, all but one of the sweatshirts have been used, thanks to the Peak Design packing cubes and their quick-release lids. However, we’d like to have a clear view of each cube where you’d open them. It would be helpful to see what’s inside rather than having to pull them out of a backpack to see what’s inside.

The packing cube’s zippers glide easily, and the compression method works well for storing a variety of bulky clothing items. However, we would prefer a zipper mechanism on the front of each cube to lock the zippers in place. This would reduce their tendency to open if they’re overstuffed.

The shoe pouch folds down to the size of the palm of your hand when not in use.

Mercedes Lilienthal

The shoe pouch didn’t have any compression capabilities, but it did a good job of safely storing a variety of shoes. From Teva sandals to hiking boots, it kept dirt and debris separate from other items, even during a quick dip at the former prison-turned-popular beach at Rummu Quarry. The shoe pouch is a sustainable solution for shoe storage compared to flimsy plastic bags or no items at all.

In short, the Peak Design Packing Cube Trio is a worthwhile investment to help you stay organized and travel smarter. Not only will the small cube, medium cube, and shoe cube help you save space, but they will also help you access your clothes or gear faster and keep things more organized. We say two thumbs up.
