Wordle has a built-in way to share your results spoiler-free, so those you send it to don’t see today’s Wordle word itself, just the colors in your grid to show your results.
To share your Wordle results, simply complete (or lose) the Wordle of the day, then wait a moment for the statistics panel to appear on your screen. Then press the “SHARE” button.
On PC, this will simply copy the text to your clipboard, so you can then paste it wherever you want, whether it’s a private message or a social media status update. On iPhone or Android, when you tap the “SHARE” button, you’ll have the option to copy to the clipboard or share the results directly to another app on your phone (like WhatsApp or Twitter).
Using Wordle’s built-in share feature is a much nicer way to share your results than risking revealing the answer to those who haven’t had a chance to play Wordle today themselves. So we highly encourage you to use it!
How to play Wordle
Wordle is a game of disconcerting simplicity. The goal is to guess the correct five-letter word in six attempts. After each attempt, the letters of the chosen word will be highlighted in green if they are in the correct place, yellow if they are in the wrong place, or gray if they do not appear at all in the word.
Using these clues, you can start narrowing down your search for the correct word. Head over to the Wordle website to try it out for yourself!
How did Wordle start?
Wordle started life as a small family game created by software engineer Josh Wardle. He created the game so he and his partner could play a fun little word game together during the pandemic, and they quickly realized there was something pretty special about this simple little guessing game. So, after a few tweaks, Wardle released it to the public on his website, Power Language.
The game was released in October 2021 and had two million daily players by the end of the year. It became a viral hit, largely due to the ease with which players could share their results without spoilers on Twitter and other social media sites. In January 2022, Wardle accepted an offer from The New York Times to acquire Wordle for a seven-figure sum. Well done, Mr. Wardle. Well done indeed.

You You can type any word you want, but know that the actual response will never be a bad word.
Are there any Wordle words that are not allowed?
You can type in just about any five-letter word in the English language and Wordle will accept it as a guess. However, the answer is chosen each day from a much smaller list of more common five-letter words. There are still thousands of possible answers, of course, but that means the answer will never be a word as obscure as, say, “THIOL,” or “CAIRD,” or “MALIC” (yes, those are all real words).
It is very rare that the New York Times chooses not to publish a Wordle of the Day response, perhaps for reasons related to current events or politics. For example, shortly after news broke that Roe v Wade might be overturned in the United States, the NYT decided to replace the word “FETUSES” with “SHINE” on March 30, because it felt that the word “fetus” was too politically charged in the context of recent events.
The New York Times has also been careful to never allow what it considers to be swear words as an answer to a Wordle riddle. But of course, there’s nothing stopping you from using even the sweariest words as riddles, as long as they’re accepted in the dictionary and as long as you understand that they’re never going to end up being the answer.
Is Wordle becoming too easy for you?
If Wordle starts to get too easy, there are a few ways to make the game more difficult for yourself. The first choice is to turn on hard mode. You can do this on the Wordle website by clicking the cog icon in the top right of the screen. Hard mode means that all the highlighted letters must be used in all future guesses. This saves you from using the common tactic of choosing two words like “OUNCE” and “PAINS” to test all five vowels right from the start.
You can take it even further by playing by what we call “ultra-hard” rules. This means that every guess you enter must could potentially be the answer. If you were just playing on hard mode and typed in “MOIST” and the “O” appeared in yellow, there would be nothing stopping you from choosing “POLAR” as your next word, even though it can’t be the answer because you already know the “O” is in the wrong place. If you’re playing on the “ultra-hard” rules, this is not allowed. You have to respect every clue and make sure every word you type is potentially the answer.
If after all that Wordle still seems too easy, you can always try one of the many other Wordle-inspired online games that have popped up over the last year. One of our favorites is Worldle, in which you have to guess a country in the world based on its shape. There’s also Waffle, which involves swapping letters in a completed grid to complete all the words; Moviedle, which shows you an entire movie in a tiny space of time and challenges you to guess the movie in six guesses; and Quordle, which asks you to solve four Wordles at once with the same guesses.
